It shows the power of community - and what happens when we have access to the latest information and a path to trusted sources and experts.
It also points to the fact that HRT works best when part of a midlife toolkit. And this is important to take note of too.
I speak to far too many women who feel like failures if they’re not transformed by their first prescription - or worse - stop their medication when symptoms persist. Our hormones are brilliant and complex things. It’s critical to work with a practitioner who will work with you to a point where your protocol works for you. And to then look to layer up, try other interventions, be curious and rigorous in your approach. Nutrition matters. Smart supplements matter too. Your body and mind deserve to be nourished, fully.
Then, if you’re yet to have a conversation with your doctor, here are a few tips to get the most from your appointment.
-
Check whether your doctor or surgery has a menopause doctor or nurse or is a member of your national menopause society: Check out the UK Directory HERE.
-
Track your symptoms before your visit: There are many free symptom tracking tools and apps. We still love the My Menopause Centre tool. It’s free, developed by doctors - and the report it gives you speaks their language too. Check it out HERE
-
Check to see if you can get a double appointment: Menopause is a whole body and mind experience. Talking about symptoms takes time. Get more if you can.
-
If you’re nervous about the conversation, take someone you love with you: We don’t have to have these conversations alone. If you’re feeling confused, tired, or worried your concerns may be dismissed, talk to your biggest cheerleader first, share everything you want your doctor to know, and take them into the appointment with you.
-
If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t: Trust your body. If you get advice or a prescription you don’t feel comfortable with, seek a second opinion.
- Remember, you don’t have to make a decision right away: Take time. Return to your doctor and talk further. Speak to a friend.
Finally, remember, no decision is final: Many of us have been made to feel like taking HRT is a once in a lifetime decision. It isn’t. You can choose to try it. And you can choose to stop. The most important thing, is for it to be right for you.
